Create a document with a transparent background

I want to create a graphic in Photoshop and then place it in InDesign—without the white background. Is there an easier way to do this than masking the unwanted background content with a clipping path or alpha channel?

When you create a new Photoshop document, the default background is white. A white canvas is easier on the eyes but, as you can see in Figure A, it becomes quite a nuisance when you place the graphic elsew...
