Channel mixing doesn't change color modes

Added on Sunday 16th of September 2007 05:35 am EST

Application:

Adobe Photoshop 7/CS/CS2

Operating Systems:

Macintosh, Microsoft Windows

I read with interest your article on "Create beautiful black and white images for low-budget print jobs." The section on channel mixing was especially useful and I liked the results I got, but with one exception. The picture was still RGB and I needed a grayscale image for a B/W job.

When I selected the monochrome check box the output channel changed to GRAY as in your example, but after adjusting the sliders and clicking OK, I had a monochrome RGB file. I would think the GRAY output channel would appear in the Channels palette, but it doesn't. Am I missing something or is my Photoshop program malfunctioning?
