Help your readers navigate PDFs more easily by add

Added on Friday 16th of April 2010 12:59 am EST

One of the predominant goals of a page designer is to produce documents readers can enjoy. Most of that enjoyment stems from the appearance and content in the document but there’s another key factor. The ability to navigate through a publication without getting lost also adds to a reader’s experience. Hyperlinks are essential tools that help readers get where they want to go.

Introduction to hyperlinks
A hyperlink is a navigation element—either text or an object—in an electronic document. When a user hovers a cursor over a hyperlink, its appearance changes to indicate a link. You can set up hyperlinks in your InDesign documents so that when you export to PDF, your readers can jump to other areas in the active PDF, to other PDF documents, or to URLs quickly.

• URL. The URL type lets you create a hyperlink to a specific URL on the Internet or a company intranet.
We’ll walk you through the steps to create each destination type and explain some of the options as we go along. To follow along with us, create a three-page InDesign document with non-facing pages. Then choose Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks to open the Hyperlinks panel. Your Hyperlinks panel will be empty, but after the tutorial, yours will look like our example shown in Figure A.
