Who says you have to make all of your selections manually? In the case of rectangular and elliptical selections, you can set precise options before making the selection, and then with just one click, let Photoshop do the work for you.

All you have to do is select either the Rectangular or the Elliptical Marquee tool from the Tools panel and then head over to the tool Options bar. Select Fixed Size from the Style pop-up menu, and then enter the width and height values of your desired selection in the Width and Height text boxes, as shown in Figure A.
