Change default tracking and kerning values to suit

Applications: Adobe InDesign CS/CS2/CS3
Operating Systems: Macintosh, Microsoft Windows
I was wondering if there is a way to reset the tracking value to be 1 (thousandths of an em space) rather than 10 or 25. I am using tracking in narrow-width paragraphs and sometimes need to track slightly to break lines to fit. Can you help?
