Don't wait for the weather blanket your image with fog in Photoshop

I need to photograph a bridge in town but my boss wants me to take the photo on a foggy day. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to wait for the weather to cooperate. Will you please explain how to add fog to an image in Photoshop?

Sure! There are different ways you can add fog to an image in Photoshop. How much control you need over the fog placement will determine which method you use, but we’ll show you two ways to get you started.

To follow along with our example, download the file from the URL given at the beginning of this article, extract the file fog.psd, launch Photoshop, and open the file shown in Figure A. (Images provided by PhotoSpin. Some images modified for educational purposes.)


Fog with a gradient mask


The first fog method we’ll show you is one that will place a blanket of fog over your image. You’ll apply a Color Fill layer with a Layer Mask to do this effect.

To blanket your image with fog:


  1. Click on the Create New Fill Or Adjustment Layer button located at the base of the Layers panel and choose Solid Color from the pop-up menu.
  2. In the Pick A Solid Color dialog box, enter 255 in the R, G, and B text boxes, and click OK
  3. Lower the Layers panel Opacity slider to 65%, as shown in Figure B.
