Streamline production with customized templates

If you produce a frequently published piece, such as a newsletter, journal, or magazine, you can save tons of production time if you base it on a template. This template can include everything that remains consistent in your publication, such as ruler guides, grids, master pages, layers, styles, and any standard graphics or text. You can even design the layout for variable content using placeholder frames. Once set up, all you have to do for the next issue is create a new InDesign document based on the template and simply place and format the new content in the designated frames. Let's now take a look to see how you can create templates.

Create a template from an existing publication
There's no sense in starting from scratch if you don't have to. If you've already spent hours designing your publication, you can generate a template based on the InDesign document you last used to lay it out. To do so:
1. Open the InDesign document that contains your publication and choose File > Save A Copy to display the Save A Copy dialog box shown in Figure A.

2. Select a location for the template, enter a filename with an .indt extension, and choose InDesign CS2 Template from the Format (Save As Type in Windows) pop-up menu. Then, click Save.
3. Close the original InDesign document and open the template by double-clicking on its file icon.
4. Alternatively, you can choose File > Open and, when the Open A File dialog box displays, select the template file, select the Open Original option button, and then click Open.
5. Once you're in the template, remove all the content that you won't use again, but leave the frames and other page elements you'll use in subsequent issues.
6. Save the template so you can use it to produce the next issue of your publication. We'll explain how to do that later in this article.
