Create your own customized embroidery patch

Adobe Photoshop CS2/CS3/CS4/CS5

Operating Systems:

Macintosh, Microsoft Windows

The patch set behind our embroidered text in the accompanying article “Make text jump off the page with an embroidered effect,” and shown in Figure A, is just as easy to create as the embroidery text effect.

To create the shape:

1.  Open the Photoshop document in which you created the embroidery text or create a new document with the same image size and resolution.

2.  Select the Ellipse tool from the Tools panel.

3.  Select the Shape Layers button on the tool Options bar.

4.  Click on the arrow to the right of the shape tools on the tool options bar to display the Ellipse Options panel and select the Unconstrained option button.

5.  Click on the Color box on the tool Options bar and set the color for the layer to white (R: 255 G: 255 B: 255) in the Color Picker. Then, click OK.

6.  Click on the Style pop-up menu on the tool options bar and select the Denim style in the Style Picker. (If it isn’t listed, choose Textures from the Style Picker’s pop-up menu, and then click Append.)

7.  Draw an oval shape.

8.  Adjust the Denim style as you like via the Shape 1 layer in the Layers panel. For example, we changed the color overlay’s color to beige and reduced the scale of the pattern overlay.
