Discover unique color combinations by taking control of Live Color

When a company changes its identity, it’s often up to the graphic designer to retool all collateral files to suit the new look. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could change all of the ads, letterheads, logos, brochures, and miscellaneous artwork easily to reflect their new image? You can with CS3’s Live Color. In just a few clicks you can change the entire color scheme of your illustrations or layouts to create an entirely different look, as shown in Figure A. And, the best part is, you can see the results immediately as you explore your color options. Let’s take a look at how Live Color can give you the color design freedom you’ve been searching for.

Our favorite feature of Live Color is the ability to create harmonious color combinations and apply them to an entire layout or just parts of an illustration using the Recolor Artwork option. Let’s see how it works by changing the colors of an exisiting Illustrator template.

To open an Illustrator Template:
1. Launch Illustrator and when the Illustrator CS3 welcome screen displays, click the From Template folder icon.
2. Navigate to Templates/Basic/Japanese Templates/Marketing/JPoster 2.ait in the New From Template dialog box.
3. Click New to open the poster layout shown in Figure B.
