Create a fantastic favicon for your website

I’m creating a website and would like it to display my logo in the web address bar. Is this something I can accomplish with Photoshop, or do I need another fancy program to do this?

The little graphic that displays in the address bar before a web URL is a favicon. Favicons show up in the address bar when a user visits your website and also in his bookmarks menu, as shown in Figure A. While there are a number of free favicon generators available online, you can create your personal favicon right in Photoshop. However, even though you can create a faviocon easily in Photoshop, Photoshop doesn’t support the ICO file format. So you will need to download a plug-in in order to save your file so that your website recognizes it.

One of the most popular free plug-ins is located at www.telegraphics.com.au/sw. Telegraphics offers the Windows Icon (ICO) file format Photoshop plug-in for many different Photoshop versions. It’s freeware, but if you enjoy their product, they ask for a $5 donation. If you wish to create and save a favicon, visit the website and download the appropriate plug-in for your platform and Photoshop version. Extract the file and place it in the folder Photoshop version/Plug-Ins/File Formats. Then, launch Photoshop.
